Update on the City Council Vote Concerning the Rezoning Request of Quail Corners Shopping Center

From Mary Settlemyre:

I wanted to give you a quick update on the City Council vote tonight concerning the rezoning request of Quail Corners Shopping Center. City Council in a 10-2 vote, voted to approve the zoning request.

For many, this is not the result that we had been working for. At the beginning of this process- 7 months ago – the renovation proposal brought to us included a gas station/convenience store, ABC Store, tire store and fast food restaurant with a drive-thru. Through the hard work of many, most of the unfavorable uses were removed by Crosland with the exception of the fast food with a drive thru. Talks over the last 4 months were focused the fast food and having a full renovation without that component. Tonight, the City Council decided that it was better to allow the fast food to insure a full renovation.

Regardless of where you stood on this issue, the individuals who worked so hard to do what they thought was best for their community, neighborhood and family showed what is so great about our area. We were represented with thoughtfulness, integrity and passion for where we live. I want to thank so many folks who went door to door in their neighborhood to collect signatures, wrote letters to City Council, attended meetings (in some cases…lots of them!) and gave so much time and energy to making the Park/Quail area a great place to live. Thank you!!!

Specifically, under the leadership of Maria Smithson (Cameron Wood ) with Mark Matthews (Quail Hollow Estates), Matt Hucko (Quail Hollow IV) and Barbara Harris (Hamlin Park) countless hours were spent to help our community! Thank you all!!

For the all of the neighborhood leaders who were part of this process, our entire community is better off than we were 7 months ago. This is because of the ignited passion and concern for our community and the work- together- towards a common goal…a better Quail Corners Shopping Center and better place to live.

Lastly, the rezoning process is in place to make sure both the petitioner and neighbors have an equal voice in impacting a community. All parties took full advantage…regardless of winning or losing, it is great to be part of the democratic process. I encourage everyone to become more involved…you and your community will be better for it!

Lastly, until the renovations are complete, please remember to frequent the businesses currently at Quail Corners! For many of us, they have become our friends and we want them to stay in business and be part of the new Quail Corners.

Below you will find how the City Council members voted.
