South Meck High School Impressive Facts:
- South Mecklenburg had 95% of its graduating 2005 class go on to post secondary education. Close to 70% went to four year universities.
- South Mecklenburg students attended over 55 Division I, II, and III universities. Examples are DUKE,UNC, NC STATE, UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, DUKE, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE, UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA, AUBURN, VIRGINIA TECH, FLORIDA STATE, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, PENN STATE, CLEMSON, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, SEWANNEE and WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY
- South Mecklenburg’s 2005 class obtained close to 4 million in academic, athletic and music scholarships. There was one appointment to the US NAVAL ACADEMY and two students received the UNC ROBERTSON SCHOLARSHIP which is a full scholarship for four years (the only high school to have TWO recipients).
- South Mecklenburg was one of four highs schools in the Charlotte area to achieve its AYP Goals for 2005 (Academic Yearly Progress-No Child Left Behind goals)
- South Mecklenburg was the first AP Gold Certified High School in CMS. The school offers 28 AP courses by highly certified AP teachers. South awarded over 50 AP diploma’s to the 2005 graduating class.
- South Mecklenburg’s average SAT score for 2005 was 1041, Providence High School was 1094, and Myers Park 1135. US average is 1028 and NC is 1010.
- South Mecklenburg has seven NATIONALLY ranked athletes, who are top recruits for Division I sports for 2005-2006, in women’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s swimming, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and men’s baseball.
- South Mecklenburg’s swim team and baseball team were number two in the state of North Carolina in 2005. Other teams traditionally place in the top three in the conference. South has had a Coach of the Year for the past decade.
- South Mecklenburg’s Yearbook was runner up in the State of North Carolina and won the Tar Heel award for 2005.
- South Mecklenburg’s Drama team placed first in National competition in 2004.
- South Mecklenburg’s chorus and band continue to finish first in their respective divisions and have won Grand Championships at the regional and national level in Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Washington, DC and Toronto.
